I feel in love this Megan’s photography quite early, once I stumbled upon her work. After following her work over the past two months, I had to know more about her and her work.
This born & raised Metro-Detroit, Michigan photographer is currently living on the road and traveling across America taking photos of moments in time. Megan uses film when it comes to photography, which every photographer should do at least once in their life. Anyway here is her interview.
Name
Megan Kathleen Mcisaac.
What is your background in photography?
I havent left the house without a camera since i was seven years old. i still have a lot to learn.
What was your first photography memory?
Watching and helping my grandfather take pictures when i was a child and spending hours looking through the subscription of national geographic that he gifted to me.
Have you ever been educated/studied, or are you self-taught photographer?
I’m self taught, everything ive learned has been through trial and plenty of errors.
Tell us a bit about the gear you use. What are your preferred camera setup?
I use whatever i can get my hands on. right now i am shooting with two cameras i was gratefully gifted, a mamiya c330 and a nikon fm2. thats it.
Do you have a preference for digital or film?
Film, but im not bothered by digital, it just doesnt please me, aesthetically. i owned a digital camera and shot with it for a couple of years and ended up selling it and i still feel good about my decision.
What is your favorite subject to shot?
Whatever inspires me. most often i like to photograph people, especially people that have made an impact on me and my memory some way or another. photographing my family and friends is a given, but i really love photographing anyone from the musicians ive met and played with to the random people ive met while traveling.
What photographers inspire or have influenced you?
Oh, there are too many. a lot of the photographers that have inspired me the most are unknown, i spend hours looking through old snapshots at antique and thrift stores. aside from that, saul leiter is a major influence as well as a lot of street photographers from the early 1900′s. ive recently been inspired by the photographs of jacob holdt, when he was hitchhiking across america. so many of my friends are a tremendous influence as well, like neal casal, keith mcarthur, noah kalina, etc.
And finally if you could live in any decade in history what would it be and why?
After spending way too much of my life wishing i were born in the 1800′s or in the 1920′s or the 1960′s or whenever, i am finally grateful for being born so late in the game. its just as important to document this era now than it was to photograph the past years. if anything, i think it might be more difficult now, because of digital photography and everyones smart phones with cameras. you have to make an extreme effort to make something that will stand out from all of those pictures, and for that i am grateful to be living now. i appreciate the challenge.
