Novelty over functionality

Is it practical for you or just sexy? What I mean is, I keep stumbling across so many cool bits of gear, methods of tracking, and making and doing. There are so many people out there that are sharing their thoughts, ideas, and methods. Some of those methods, I say to myself, man, I wish I was a person who did that. I wish I had a process like that. And I try it for a few months and then fail miserably. I have come to the conclusion that before starting something, I need to do a quick check. Is that practical for me or just sexy?

I have tried bullet journaling, daily tracking, and failed after a year of doing it. I have tried filming and talking to the camera like Peter McKinnon, but I'm not Peter McKinnon; I'm me, so I instantly failed that too. I have tried to adopt and emulate so many people I look up to. But not because they are who they are, but because of what they represent or how they look; it's just so sexy. And it's human nature to see success and want to emulate it. To be and replicate the people we admire.

It's a hard thing to come to terms with that someone who looks so right, so appealing, and so cool, sexy, and has attractive methods or style just doesn't work for you. And it's obvious because we are us, and they are them.

It's okay to try things; I encourage you to do that, try, experiment, play, learn, and see what works for you. But if you have something that already works, you already have the diary, the camera, the laptop, you don't need to change it up. You don't need to look for an alternative because you are already doing the thing. The problem isn't you, or lack of novelty; it's a question of habit, motivation, and reward.

It might not be sexy; it might not look cool to you, but it works. And if it works, you never know, sharing what works for you might help someone else out there. How you start your day, how you get things done, how you read so much, write so much, how you get motivation, stay in shape, have a wonderful work ethic. There is nothing wrong if you have all these things already.

When you see something new, something different, ask yourself, is this practical for me, or is it just appealing because it's new and different? Novelty over functionality.
