Inconsistency is ruining your life
Inconsistency is the opposite of habit. Inconsistency is where you have too many variance or contradictions in what you are currently doing. An example talked to death is a diet plan. You do it for a little while, week, month, then oh my god, who would have thought that you would get back to your original weight after you stopped? Shock horror?! Being inconsistent with your days, your weeks, months and years is a great way of going nowhere. Rather than the contradiction about altering nothing, it's when you keep changing what you are doing that you end up nowhere.
When I think of a habit, I think about a routine that you do on a daily, weekly basis. It's something that you either have to plan or do automatically. That's a habit, that's a routine. Something you do all the time consistently without fail. Without waiting for inspiration or to be in the right mood. No, you do it regardless, you get up and work out, you get up and start writing, you get up and wake the kids, then get to work.
"We are what we repeatedly do,” Aristotle said, “therefore, excellence is not an act but a habit.” - The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman
Stop trying another new thing in hopes you will love it for the rest of your life, that's not how it works. Do you hate your job? Instead of looking for something new, just get really good at your job and find joy in mastery. Hate how you look or your health, don't take up a diet. Change your lifestyle, change your daily eating habits. If you want to get good or make a change just do one thing really well or at maximum a few things. The world might be saying you're missing out, or that person's life looks so much better. But in reality, we know deep down, that's all highlights and fake smiles.
Incremental improvements. Small adjustments. Think of bettering yourself like, taking another step forward. You haven't changed how you're walking or where you're going, but you have taken another step in improving on your journey. That's a habit, that's a goal, that's a profession, that's a lifestyle. Being inconsistent will get you nowhere. Back to the analogy about walking, instead of taking another step you, step back, step forward, run, jump, sidestep. Shit, it might be fun in the moment and satisfy your monkey mind and FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). But that's about it, to everyone else it looks like you can't commit, you're a flake, a run on the mill. Because even thou it's fun doing new things, after a while just doing new things all the time, gets old fast when you realise everyone has left you behind.
The life that is remembered, is a life of boredom, doing the same thing every day. That life is an Olympic athlete, a business owner, a scientist doing another hypothesis. The genius, committing to one thing their whole life. Persistence, a lifestyle, a habit of doing it day in day out, regardless if they feel like it, regardless if anyone is watching. That's consistency.
"The sure sign of an amateur is he has a million plans and they all start tomorrow." - Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield and Shawn Coyne
So you have to choose, what are you willing to do for the rest of your life. What do you want to get good at, really master? Pick it and commit to that one thing, do it every day, practice it, work at it. Turn your one thing into something you do so often and so much that it becomes normal, it becomes part of your character. Be so consistent at this one thing that everyone looks up to you for advice around that subject or skill. Stop changing what you're doing every day, week, month or year. Stop being inconsistent with your life, and start creating a life that has meaning, that has structure. Create a life where you can look back on and be proud that you stuck at it, rain or shine, and say I committed. I mastered that game called life.
